NATCHEZ — A Natchez man was arrested late Monday after leading police on a chase that wound its way through downtown, sometimes taking one-way streets in the wrong direction.

When the chase was over, Robert L. Wilson, 45, 214 Broadmoor Drive, was arrested on charges of failure to obey police officer, fleeing law enforcement vehicle, disobedience of traffic control device and motor vehicle violation. His bond was set at $1,321, but he was detained on a hold from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.

According to reports at the Natchez Police Department, the incident started at 11:32 p.m. when a patrol officer observed what he thought to be a suspicious silver Pontiac in the area of St. Catherine Street. The officer ran the tag on the vehicle and the dispatcher advised him that the registered owner had active warrants and the tag was expired, the report says.

When the officer returned to where he had seen the vehicle, it had moved. The officer saw the vehicle heading northbound on Auburn Avenue toward St. Catherine Street. The officer then turned on his lights and siren to initiate a traffic stop.

Rather than stopping, however, the report says the Pontiac continued down St. Catherine Street, turning onto Winston Hill Alley, a dead end. The suspect turned around at the dead end and returned to St. Catherine Street, turning onto Martin Luther King Jr. Street, making a left onto St. Mary Street and then a right on North Union Street.

The vehicle then turned left on Bishop Street and took another left on North Rankin Street, taking the street the wrong way. The suspect then turned left on Madison Street, continuing on to Aldrich Street and continuing on to Fourth Street and East Franklin Street to McCabe Street, turning back onto St. Catherine Street to then turn onto Brenham Avenue and Pintard Street.

At the intersection of Pintard Street and Oak Street, however, the car crashed into a tree and Wilson allegedly climbed out of the driver’s side window and fled on foot. The officer eventually subdued the suspect after he reportedly jumped into a nearby gully.

Wilson and a passenger in the car were taken to Natchez Regional Medical Center and treated. A second passenger refused treatment.
