NATCHEZ — The man accused in a robbery-turned-murder recently told the courts he was not guilty and made a $90,000 bond earlier this week.
Davarious Jamal Clemons, 19, 224 Oakland Drive, was released from the Adams County jail Sunday. He was indicted by an Adams County grand jury in March on charges of murder and attempted armed robbery in connection with the October 2011 slaying of Cedric M. Morgan, 30.
Clemons initial court appearance before Circuit Court Judge Forrest “Al” Johnson was April 9, and the defendant pleaded “not guilty” to the charges against him.
The judge set the defendant’s bond and scheduled a jury trial for July 26.
The case originated late on the night of Oct. 8, 2011, at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. and St. Catherine streets.
At that time, police alleged that Clemons was attempting to rob Morgan — who was in a vehicle with his wife, Crystal Morgan — but the victim refused to give him money and tried to flee by driving away.
The suspect allegedly fired a shot into Morgan’s vehicle, the bullet striking Morgan in the chest. Morgan continued driving for another three blocks before he crashed into a brick fence on Jefferson Street.
Police received a call about the car hitting the fence at 11:55 p.m. By the time they arrived, Morgan was dead.
The $90,000 bond Clemons had to meet was composed of two $45,000 bonds, one for murder and the other for attempted armed robbery.
