NATCHEZ — Birdies were flying all over Beau Pré Country Club Thursday as low scores dominated the Copiah-Lincoln Foundation Natchez Golf Classic.

But it was two eagles that helped push People’s Bank No. 2 to the Corporate Championship in the four-man scramble format.

The team of Anthony “Poochie” Kent, Mark Curry, Michael Wallace and Robbie Shell eagled holes 12 and 18 to push the team to the championship.

“Mark Curry carried us,” Wallace said. “He was good from tee to green today.”

Curry was a bit more modest about his play.

“I don’t know about that,” Curry said. “But I hit the ball well today and putted well.”

Curry, from McComb, said he tries to play golf at Beau Pré three or four times a year, and the course has always been good to him.

Kent, from Bude, said he has played the Co-Lin tournament several times, and it is one that he enjoys playing.

“The whole tournament is good,” Kent said. “The sponsorship is good, and it’s just a great tournament for a good cause.”

The cause is to raise money for the Co-Lin Foundation scholarship and teacher development fund, and Co-Lin President Ronnie Nettles said he was pleased with this year’s event.

“Today was great,” he said. “We had a beautiful day, a great turnout and a lot of support.”

Nettles said it is always special to see the community come out to support Co-Lin.

“This tournament means a lot to me personally, because I was here for the first one,” he said. “To see the amount of support for us all these years says a lot about the community and how they feel about Co-Lin.”

Nettles said money raised from the tournament will help provide scholarships to students that may not have other forms of financial aid.

Thursday’s tournament was the 12th Co-Lin tournament, and Nettles said he is glad to see the increase in corporate involvement over the years.

Twenty-three teams competed in the tournament Thursday, and prizes were awarded for a variety of team and individual accomplishments.

The team of Jeff Anderson, Casey Hamm, Brandon Garrity and Joe Willis took home the Low Gross score title. The foursome represented Dr. Jeff Anderson’s team.

Willis said it felt great to win a team title, and he enjoyed his second appearance at the tournament.

“It’s just the people that put on the tournament do such a great job,” he said. “It’s a good course, and we have a good time getting out here with friends and supporting Co-Lin. Go Wolfpack.”

The team from Concordia Bank took home the Low Net score for the tournament. Concordia Bank was made up of Mark Welch, Ryan Thomas and John Mark Williams.

Four players also took home prizes for closest to the pin competitions on Beau Pré’s four par 3s. Chad Hartzog took home the prize for longest drive, and Bob Dearing won the $500 ball-drop prize.

Co-Lin Foundation board member Bill Salters said the scholarship and development fund is now approaching $100,000, and this year’s tournament raised approximately $10,000.
