LAUREN WOOD | THE NATCHEZ DEMOCRAT — Cathedral School’s Mckenzie Milligan slides into second base as Noxapater High School’s Haley Pierce looks to make a catch during Friday’s second round playoff game at Cathedral softball field.

NATCHEZ — Cathedral’s Ginny Daggett and Mollie Devening provided plenty of dominant pitching in the Green Wave’s playoff matchup Friday night.

Cathedral faced Noxapater in the second round of the MHSAA Class 1A playoffs, and the two Green Wave hurlers combined to allow no runs on just four hits to secure the three-game series sweep.

“We are very fortunate to have the two pitchers we have,” Cathedral head coach Gary Blackwell said. “They did a fantastic job.”

Devening received plenty of offensive help in Game 1 of the series. Cathedral pounded out 14 hits and forced nine Noxapater errors to score 17 runs in the game.

“We were hitting the ball very well in the first game,” Blackwell said. “We just got some good hits, our bunting worked to get people on base, and we got timely hits.”

Payton Monticello led the Green Wave with three hits in the game. She also drove in three runs and scored three runs. Mckenzie Milligan, Kimble Devening, Tori Edwards and MacKenzie Watts each tallied two hits as well.

Mollie Devening pitched all five innings of the 17-0 victory. She struck out five batters and allowed two hits.

Game 2 saw an almost identical pitching performance for Cathedral, but the offense cooled off considerably.

The Green Wave tallied only four hits in the second game but managed to push across two runs, which was enough for Daggett to nail down the win.

Daggett helped her own cause with a RBI-double in the third inning to give Cathedral a one-run lead. The Green Wave pushed across another run in the bottom of the fifth when Milligan came around to score on a RBI-single by Daggett.

“Before the second game we knew it was going to be tough the second time because we used a lot of energy,” Blackwell said. “We hit the ball hard, but it was right to them.”

Daggett pitched all seven innings for Cathedral. She gave up two hits and struck out nine Noxapater batters.

Blackwell said it was a relief to sweep the series Friday.

“It feels real good to get on to the next round, because we know it’s going to get harder each round,” he said.

Cathedral (16-4-1) will face the winner of the matchup between Salem and Sebastopol, Blackwell said. Game 1 will be Friday on the road for the Green Wave.
