VIDALIA — Concordia Parish residents will soon see a new company picking up trash at their houses.
The Concordia Parish Police Jury passed a resolution at its Tuesday meeting assigning the parish’s trash pickup contract to Waste Connections of Monroe. The parish previously used Diamond Disposal.
David Massey of Waste Connections said his company is in the process of purchasing Diamond Disposal from John Bunning, who Massey said is retiring.
Massey said his company will purchase Diamond Disposal’s facility in Ferriday and will keep all current employees.
The transfer of the contract is pending the review and approval by the parish’s attorney, Brad Burget. Jury President Melvin Ferrington said there are a few details of the contract he wanted to discuss with Burget.
Ferrington informed Massey that the parish will begin negotiations for a new trash contract in late July or August because the current contract expires at the end of the year.
Juror Tommy “Red” Tiffee asked Massey if his company was going to do as good of a job as Diamond Disposal has done in the parish in the past.
“We’re certainly going to put a good effort forward and try,” Massey said.
Juror Willie Dunbar said the parish has had problems in the past with keeping tree limbs picked up.
Massey said Waste Connections could offer the parish more services, such as limb pickup, for a nominal fee.
In other news from the meeting:
• Clerk of Court Clyde Ray Webber was scheduled to swear in the jurors, all of who were recently re-elected, but was not at the meeting. Ferrington congratulated all the jurors on being re-elected.
“It shows me the parish is being run quite well, and the people are satisfied with the way the parish is being run,” Ferrington said.
• The police jury changed its next meeting from May 28 to May 29 because of the Memorial Day holiday.
• The jury met in executive session for approximately 30 minutes to discuss personnel and legal strategy.
• The jury passed Tiffee’s motion to recommend Tom Baldwin to fill the position of justice of the peace.
• The jury approved an occupational license for Miss-Lou Physical Therapy Inc., which is relocating to 1400 U.S. 65 in Ferriday.
• Ferrington announced that the parish did not receive any proposals from any company to remove the radio tower from the old courthouse roof.
The jury granted Ferrington permission to make calls to get cost estimates on taking the tower down.
The jury’s next meeting will be at 6 p.m. May 28 in the Concordia Parish Courthouse.
