LORMAN — Alcorn State University has hired former Ole Miss defensive back Jay Hopson as its new head football coach.

Hopson was introduced as head coach on the ASU campus Monday afternoon. A Vicksburg native, Hopson had originally withdrawn his name from consideration for the ASU head coaching position during the search, but he ultimately accepted an offer to lead the Braves.

Hopson is the first white head football coach at ASU. His most recent coaching job was as defensive coordinator for Memphis University from 2010-2011. He also served as defensive coordinator for Southern Mississippi from 2005-2007, as well as defensive backs/recruiting coordinator for Ole Miss in 2004.
