BATON ROUGE — Just a month ago, Centreville Academy’s Hunter Devall was celebrating the Tigers’ second-consecutive state baseball championship.
Now Devall is a Tiger of a different kind, and more than ready to take the next step in his baseball career.
The Centreville left-hander started his collegiate career at LSU last week, but right now he is focusing on adjusting to college life.
“It’s going pretty good,” Devall said about starting classes. “It’s tough. It’s not like high school. It’s a lot harder, but everything is going great for me living down here in Baton Rouge.”
Devall said he is currently taking two classes, but his schedule will become more cluttered next week when he starts offseason baseball workouts.
Until then, he will continue to adjust to the college lifestyle, which he said he is already fitting into well.
“It’s actually pretty awesome (being at LSU),” he said. “It’s definitely a new experience for me. I enjoy living here close to the school. There are a lot of people on campus. It’s interesting, but it’s tough to find my way around sometimes.”
Devall said he will start throwing next week, but he is unsure of what his throwing regimen will be. He said he would talk with LSU pitching coach, Alan Dunn, soon to find out what he wants.
Devall said he is enjoying the small aspects of being an LSU baseball player, but he is already ready for the big stage.
“I am ready to get on the mound in front of 10,000-plus fans,” he said. “That will be pretty thrilling.”
Devall said before that he has his sights set on impressing his new teammates and coaches.
“I also look forward to getting in the weight room and inter-squad games to show them what I can do.”
With his LSU career still in front of him, Devall is still being recognized for what he did as a prep standout. Friday Devall found out he was named to The Clarion-Ledger All-State first team.
“That was awesome,” he said. “I am very honored to be selected with those 12 guys.”
Devall said he knew most of the players that made the team with him.
“Throughout the years, we have grown up playing, and it was awesome we all made it,” he said.
Now that he has had time to reflect on what his team accomplished at Centreville, Devall said he would remember just how special it was.
“I’ll remember everything,” he said. “Not just last year, but the last two years. It all comes together, and it’s pretty awesome looking back and seeing what we’ve accomplished over the last two years at Centreville Academy. It was a great experience, and something I’ll never forget.”
Devall will always have those memories, but now he is starting to realize his dream of being an LSU baseball player.
“(It’s sunk in) a little bit,” he said. “You walk around campus and the way people treat you so far it’s starting to feel more real. I’m still in a little bit of shock.”
Devall said he has not decided what he will study at LSU, but he is excited about the opportunity to interact with new people in college.
