NASHVILLE — A gas leak explosion forced Adams County Sheriff Chuck Mayfield and approximately 500 other sheriffs to evacuate their rooms at the Opryland Gaylord Resort and Convention Center in Nashville Tuesday evening.

None of the hotel’s occupants were injured. Mayfield was in Nashville for the National Sheriff’s Convention.

The explosion happened at approximately 8:15 p.m.

Investigators with the Department of Homeland Security, local law enforcement and firefighters investigated the explosion before ruling out suspicious activity.

“We’re all very lucky to be safe and unharmed,” Mayfield said. “I’m thankful that national and local area officials handled this matter swiftly and were able to get us all back in our rooms by early (Wednesday) morning.”
