NATCHEZ — Two Natchez men were given additional charges this week after trying to sneak cigarettes into the Adams County Jail.

Verenzo Cartrell Green, 28, 209 Country Club Drive, and Tre Michael Herbert, 26, 1 Cottage Farm Road, were both charged with introduction of contraband into the jail.

Sheriff Chuck Mayfield said Herbert had been in court when someone slipped him cigarettes in the courtroom.

Green was also in possession of cigarettes, Mayfield said.

“Cigarettes are contraband because ours is a non-smoking jail,” he said. “We watch that pretty close. They are searched every time they leave and every time they come back.”

Herbert was originally booked into the jail in charges of prescription forgery.

Green was booked in March on burglary, weapons and contempt of court charges.
