HARRISONBURG — State officials confirmed 31 new cases of West Nile Virus in Louisiana Friday, one of which is in Catahoula Parish.
According to the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, the new cases bring the state total to 176 this year.
The department also confirmed one new death Friday, bringing the death toll to 10 in Louisiana
Catahoula Police Jury President Libby Ford said the parish does not have spraying program to prevent mosquitoes.
“We don’t have the funds to spray,” she said.
Ford said she believes some of the towns in Catahoula Parish spray for mosquitoes.
The police jury, Ford said, tries to remind Catahoula residents to dump out any buckets of water and use bug spray when outdoors.
“Because we don’t have the money to spray, we try to remind people to be aware of mosquitoes and be careful,” Ford said.
Mississippi has 129 cases of West Nile Virus so far this year, one of which is in Adams County, according to the Mississippi Department of Health. Four people have died this year from West Nile in Mississippi.
According to the Center for Disease Control’s website, there were 1,993 reported cases of West Nile Virus in humans in the United States as of Sept. 4, including 87 deaths.
Of these, 1,069, 54 percent, were classified as neuroinvasive disease, such as meningitis or encephalitis, and 924, or 46 percent, were classified as non-neuroinvasive disease.
The 1,993 cases reported thus far in 2012 is the highest number of West Nile virus disease cases reported to CDC through the first week in September since West Nile virus was first detected in the United States in 1999.
