FAYETTE — Cody Gilchrist had 13 carries for 105 yards, including a 60-yard touchdown run with 6:53 left in the ball game to give the Jefferson County Tigers a much-needed win Friday night over the South Pike Eagles, 12-6.
Jefferson County’s running game and defense allowed the Tigers to overcome a rough game by quarterback Rashaad Bradley, who completed just one of eight passes with one interception for 25 yards. Gilchrist also had nine solo tackles, one assist and one sack.
And it was defense that got the Tigers on the board midway through the second quarter, as Charlie Clark recovered a South Pike fumble in the end zone for a touchdown to give them a 6-0 lead. South Pike responded when Destin Mcghee threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Austin Gross with just 2:18 to go until halftime to make the score 6-6. It would remain that way until Gilchrist’s game-winning touchdown.
Jefferson County (2-4) opens up Region 7-3A action next Friday with its homecoming game against Crystal Springs at 7:30 p.m.
