Prep football: Tigers, Rams focused on this week

woodville — At times it has been the defense that has dominated during Wilkinson County Christian Academy’s five-game winning streak. In other games it has been the offense that has controlled the game. But last week was the first time the special teams stole the show.
The Rams blocked a punt for a touchdown and returned a kickoff for a touchdown that sparked a 55-6 victory at Tallulah Academy.
Head coach David Wright said he was happy to see the third phase of his football team dominate a game.
“We set the tone with special teams for the first time this season, and it was really fun to see,” he said. “A lot of these guys are younger guys like sophomores that have really stepped up each week. They really wanted some attention, and they went and got it.”
The Rams have won their last two games by a combined score of 111-6, and that domination has given Wright the chance to play a lot of players.
“Being able to substitute really helps in practice, because we have so many kids working so hard for a few chances to get in,” he said. “It’s fun to rotate and see the depth, even of young talent that is going to be around for seven more years.”
WCCA has played itself into an enviable position in MAIS District 3-A. The Rams are 5-0 in district play with two games remaining, and two wins would give them the outright championship.
The Rams’ biggest obstacle may lie in its final opponent, CENLA Christian, but Wright said his team is not looking past Amite School Center this week.
“We don’t talk about CENLA, we just fill them up with Amite and what they are going to do to us,” Wright said.
Former WCCA coach Ray Olive now coaches for ASC, and Wright said the team is excited about the opportunity to play the Rebels and get better this week in practice.
“We are really just competing with the Rams right now for positions on the field,” Wright said. “We still have guys fighting for defensive line and linebacker spots. They are waiting for their chance and doing what they can to motivate the guys in front of them.”
WCCA (7-1, 5-0) will travel to ASC (3-5, 2-3) at 7 p.m. Friday.
Centreville at Central Private
CENTREVILLE — The top team in MAIS Class AA cruised to yet another win Friday when Centreville Academy crushed Bowling Green 43-8.
The Tigers have won their last three games by an average margin of 44-10, and will look to keep their streak going Friday against Central Private.
Just two wins stand in the way of Centreville finishing its season undefeated, and assistant coach Brian Stutzman said the Tigers will take those two contests one at a time.
“We have two district games left, and we are back healthy and at full strength,” he said. “We are just trying to go win our district.”
Centreville running back Tyler Caston returned from an injury this week to bolster the Tigers’ already prolific running game, Stutzman said.
The marquee matchup of the District 6-AA slate is not until the final week of the season next week when Centreville faces Silliman Institute. Both teams are undefeated in district play, but Stutzman said the Tigers are focused on Central Private first.
“We are just taking each week one game at a time,” he said. “They know what next week is, but we have to concentrate on taking care of business this week.”
Central Private has the ability to run the ball out of an I-formation and also go to spread formations and pass the ball, Stutzman said.
“They are real scrappy, and we look for them to put 11 around the line of scrimmage to try to stop us from running.”
Centreville (9-0, 2-0) will take the trip to Central Private (2-7, 0-3) Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
