NATCHEZ — A funeral Mass for Arthur William Weed, 82, a lifelong resident of Natchez, who died Friday, Nov. 16, 2012, after a brief illness at a nursing facility in Fayetteville, Ark., surrounded by loving family and friends, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Basilica. Burial will follow in Catholic Hill at the Natchez City Cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home. A reception will immediately follow at Assumption Church Parish Hall.
Mr. Weed was born Aug. 24, 1930, in the home of his aunt in Natchez, the son of Wallace and Cecile Doherty Weed. He graduated from St. Joseph catholic High. He retired from International Paper Company in 1992, having spent 40 years there as a lab technician.
Mr. Weed was known for his generosity to wait staff at the various cafes and restaurants he frequented including Eola Hotel, Biscuits & Blues, Carriage House, Natchez Coffee Company, Jugheads, Sandbar and Roux 61, to name a few.
He attended mass faithfully most every day at St. Mary Basilica. Archie enjoyed walking around Natchez. He stopped by the Knights of Columbus Clubhouse most days. He shopped weekly at the Natchez Market, banked at United Mississippi Bank downtown weekly, and liked to visit and say hello to those he met along the way. His favorite foods included friend chicken, fried catfish and banana pudding.
Mr. Weed loved college football and his favorite team was Notre Dame. He liked the St. Louis Cardinals when it came to baseball. He enjoyed eating out with friends and reading books and magazines. He loved and cherished all his extended family. He enjoyed visiting his relatives and friends in Arkansas and California several times a year. He was always grateful to those who gave him rides to and from church, the grocery store and errands in Natchez and to the airport so he could visit those he loved. He told his nephew that he was ready to go be with God and with “my mama and daddy.”
Mr. Weed was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mary Agnes Weed Wilson.
Survivors include five nieces and nephews, Perry A. Wilson Jr. and wife, Drew, William Bruce Wilson, and Amy L. Wilson, all of Fayetteville, Joseph R. Wilson of Pacifica, Calif., and Susan J. Wilson of San Francisco; one great-nephew, Brandon Wilson of Fayetteville; and one great-niece, Kelli Wilson of Englewood, Colo.
