Boys roundups: Vidalia goes ice cold in second quarter, fall to Marksville

MARKSVILLE, La. — After grabbing the lead at the end of the first quarter, the Vidalia Vikings went ice cold from the field in the second quarter and Marksville took advantage as the Tigers ended up with a 66-46 win Tuesday night in LHSAA District 3-3A play.
The first quarter went back and forth between the two teams and ended with Vidalia having a 14-12 lead. That lead didn’t last very long as Marksville dominated the second quarter on both ends of the court. The Vikings scored just six points while the Tigers wound up with 21 points for a 33-20 halftime lead.
Even though the Vikings played better in the third quarter, they could not get enough defensive stops to get back in the game. In fact they were outscored by Marksville 20-16 in that quarter to trail 53-36.
Terrell Virgis led Vidalia with 15 points and Deion Brown added 14 points. Julius Wilson’s, one of the Vikings’ leading scorers this season, was held to just two points.
Vidalia (5-4 in district) finishes its regular season Friday night at home against Avoyelles for Senior Night.
Piney Woods 97, Cathedral 35
PINEY WOODS — The Cathedral Green Wave was in for a long night against the Piney Woods Tornadoes Tuesday night after giving up 29 points in the first quarter of what turned out to be a blowout in an MHSAA Region 7-1A game.
Led by Dwight Coley and Shannon Lewis, Piney Woods jumped out to a 29-9 lead at he end of the first quarter and when halftime arrived, the Tornadoes had a commanding 50-12 advantage. And it only got worse for Cathedral in the third quarter as Piney Woods scored 30 points and led 80-20 heading into the fourth quarter.
Coley led all scorers with 25 points and Lewis had 21 points. Cathedral was led by Jardarius Anderson with seven points and Alex Weadock chipped in with five points.
Cathedral (7-17, 1-8) plays at Bogue Chitto Friday night.
Wilkinson County 58, Jefferson County 46
FAYETTE — Allenzae Staggers and Trae McKenzie scored 15 points each as the Wilkinson County Wildcats pulled away in the fourth quarter to defeat the Jefferson County Tigers in MHSAA Region 7-3A action Tuesday night.
The game was close for much of the first three quarters. Wilkinson County led Jefferson County 12-11 after one quarter of play and 24-19 at halftime. The Tigers held the Wildcats to just nine points in the third quarter, but they weren’t able to really take advantage of the situation as the scored 10 points and still trailed by four points.
Then the Wildcats went on a tear in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Tigers 25-18 to end up with the 12-point victory. Phillip Fountain added 10 points for Wilkinson County. Jefferson County was led by Nicholas Brown with a game-high 22 points and Jarmel Anderson chipped in with 11 points.
Wilkinson County (15-10, 7-2) plays at Prentiss Friday night. Jefferson County (no records given) plays at Franklin County Friday night.
