Golden Eagles win, move to 20-6

GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Dwayne Davis scored seven of his 23 points in overtime to help Southern Mississippi reach 20 wins for the fourth consecutive season by defeating East Carolina 86-82 Saturday night.
A jumper by Davis put the Golden Eagles (20-6, 9-2 Conference USA) ahead 80-79 with 1:45 remaining in overtime. He added two free throws on Southern Mississippi’s next possession and made 1 of 2 with 15 seconds left after the Pirates (14-10, 5-6) closed it to 83-82 on Robert Sampson’s 3-pointer.
Davis’ two free throws tied the game at 71 with 28 seconds left in regulation, and it went to overtime when East Carolina’s Marshall Guilmette missed a jumper with 3 seconds left.
Neil Watson scored 17 points and Jonathan Mills 14 for Southern Mississippi.
Akeem Richmond scored 25 points and Miguel Paul 22 for East Carolina. Paul also had eight assists, and Sampson had 16 points and 13 rebounds.
