CENTREVILLE — Thanks to strong pitching performances by Blake Chelette and Brennan Fucich, the Central Private School Rebels swept an important MAIS District 6-AA varsity doubleheader from the Centreville Academy Tigers Friday afternoon, winning Game 1, 9-2, and taking Game 2, 3-0.
In the first game, Chelette allowed two runs on just two hits, struck out nine batters and walked none in six innings to pick up the win. Brad Miller went 2-for-4 with a triple and Layton Laird was 2-for-4 with a double.
Central Private opened up a close game with six runs in the top of the fifth inning that gave the Rebels a 9-1 lead over the Tigers. Corey Gaulden went just four-plus innings and gave up seven runs on five hits.
In the second game, Fucich was the winning pitcher as he fanned eight batters and Miller got the save with a scoreless seventh inning. Chase Martin drove in two runs and went 2-for-3 with a double and Blake Benoit was 2-for-3.
Randy Bell limited the Rebels to just five hits and struck out 10 in a complete-game performance, but Centreville’s bats were held in check yet again despite three Central Private errors as Fucich gave up just three hits.
Centreville Academy (10-3, 6-3) has a home game at 6:30 p.m. next Tuesday against Silliman Institute.
