NEW ORLEANS — Services for Sister Catherine Junkin, D.C., 84, of New Orleans, who entered eternal life Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at Our Lady of Wisdom Health Center in New Orleans, will be today at Our Lady of Wisdom Health Center Chapel in New Orleans.

Prayer service will be at 9:30 a.m. Mass of Resurrection will be at 11 a.m.

Burial will follow at St. Vincent Cemetery (Soniat Street) under the direction of Schoen Funeral Home in New Orleans.

Sister Catherine was born Dec. 15, 1928, in Natchez, the daughter of William J. Junkin Sr. and Bertha Zurhellen Junkin. She was baptized Margaret Zurhellen Junkin.

Sister Catherine entered the Daughters of Charity in 1946. All her 66 years in ministry were devoted to Catholic elementary education. She held a bachelor of science degree in education, a master’s degree in math education and post graduate work in educational administration. Her early teaching assignments took her to Long Beach, Dallas, Price, Utah, Carson City, Nev., and St. Louis. Since 1964, Sister Catherine has served in Louisiana. In Donaldsonville and New Orleans she has served as teacher and principal of a number of Catholic schools.

Sister Catherine will be missed by her family, by her sisters in the community and by a number of friends, co-workers and former students.

Sister Catherine was preceded in death by two brothers, William and George; her twin sister, Edwina and Edwina’s husband, Gene Blanchard; her stepmother, Genevieve Junkin; and one stepbrother, Richard Smith.

Survivors include two sisters, Sister Mary Junkin, D.C., of Evansville, Ind., and Marty Junkin Seibert and husband, J.W., of Natchez; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Mary’s Academy, 6905 Chef Menteur Highway, New Orleans, LA 70126 or St. Mary Basilica, 107 S. Union St., Natchez, MS 39120, would be preferred and appreciated.
