BUDE — The Philadelphia Tornadoes rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to defeat the Franklin County Bulldogs 5-3 Friday afternoon to take Game 1 of this MHSAA Class 3A South State first-round series.
Franklin County scored one run in the bottom of the first inning and one run in the bottom of the second for that 2-0 advantage. But it didn’t take long for Philadelphia to take the momentum way from the Region 7-3A champion Bulldogs.
The Tornadoes, the No. 3 seed out of Region 5-3A, scored one run in the top of the third inning and then took the lead for good with two runs in the top of the fourth. They added two runs in the top of the sixth for a 5-2 lead.
“We didn’t make the routine plays when we had to,” Franklin County head coach Brent Calcote said. “And we got flat toward the end of the ball game.”
The Bulldogs scored one run in the bottom of the seventh inning to make it a 5-3 game, but that would be as far as the rally would get. Ethan Verduin was charged for the loss on the mound for the Bulldogs.
Franklin County (14-8) will look to even the series at 1-1 when it travels to Philadelphia for Game 2 of this best-of-three series at 6 p.m. today.
