Lake St. John — Boaters aren’t known for crashing into Lake St. John’s shores, but they may have a bit of protection after a recent addition.

Ducks Nest II manager Hannah Bradford activated the protection at 6 p.m. Friday.

With the flick of a switch, a black-and-white-striped lighthouse illuminated the lake’s shores.

Most lighthouses remind boats of the shoreline’s location, but the Ducks Nest lighthouse serves as a shining beacon for diners, rather than boaters. However, Bradford said boaters might use the lighthouse to identify the restaurant.

Bradford said diners often comment on the new addition.

“They love it,” she said. “It’s a cool addition that lets people know where the Ducks Nest is.”

The light rotates when turned on. Bradford said the light remains off during the day.

The lighthouse also has a small door, though Bradford said nothing is contained inside.

The June addition of the lighthouse is one of a number of additions made since James Bradford took over late last year.

Sitting on a bench nearby, Pride, La., residents Loretta and Lauren Martone commented on the lighthouse.

“It’s a cool little addition,” Lauren Martone said. “But, I don’t know how many boats it is going to prevent from hitting the shore. That’s probably not much of a problem around here.”
