AUSTIN, Texas — John Caleb Stowers, 84, died Tuesday, July 2, 2013, in Austin, Texas.

Mr. Stowers was born Oct. 10, 1928, in Natchez, the son of John H. Stowers and Effie Stowers.

Mr. Stowers graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in engineering and later received his law degree from the University of Houston in 1973. He was a veteran of the Korean War and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force in 1955. He worked at NASA in Houston and as an attorney for various Houston title companies including Charter Title and LandAmerica.

Mr. Stowers married Charline Morrison in 1959 and had two children, John and Jean Christina. They lived together in Las Cruses, N.M., Huntsville, Ala., and eventually relocated to Clear Lake City, Texas in 1965. After he retired, he moved to Austin in 2004.

Mr. Stowers was a longtime ultra-runner, race-walker and outdoorsman. He ran a number of marathons, including long-distance races that were up to 100 miles long. He ran the Leadville Trail 100 race 34 times from 1989 to 2004. To him, a 10-mile run was just a warm-up.

Mr. Stowers was preceded in death by his parents; one son, John Caleb Stowers V; one daughter, Jean Christina Stowers; and one brother, Luther Stowers.

Survivors include one sister, Anne Stowers James; six nieces, Valrie James, Sally James O’Flynn, Susan James Graves, Sara Green, Ann Stowers and Mary Stowers; two nephews, John James and Luther Stowers; one sister-in-law, Mina Stowers; and two daughters-in-law, Linda Wheatley and Charline Stowers Coco.
