Rain halts Concordia 14s’ rematch with Monroe

VIDALIA — The Concordia Dixie Youth 14-year-old All-Stars will have to wait until the state tournament to maybe get another shot at the Monroe All-Stars.

After dropping a game against Monroe 9-2 Tuesday night in the district tournament, Concordia was scheduled to take on Monroe again Thursday night. But multiple rounds of thunderstorms forced the rest of the district tournament to get canceled, leaving Concordia in second place behind Monroe.

“They didn’t think they could get the fields ready to play on (today), and Monroe was undefeated, while we had one loss,” Concordia head coach James Thomas said. “The district director decided it would be better to let Monroe take first instead of them having to travel back down here another day.”

While a second-place finish still puts Concordia in the state tournament, Thomas admitted that he was disappointed his boys didn’t get another shot at Monroe.

“I feel like we didn’t give our best performance the other night, and my kids are better than what they showed,” he said. “But that’s just the way things go. Monroe is going to the same place we are, so maybe we’ll be able to meet up with them again.”

The state tournament will be in Sulphur, La., with pool play taking place July 20-21. After that, the tournament will divide into a 16-team bracket.
