SANTA FE, N.M. — After being held scoreless in the first four innings, the Vidalia 13- and 14-year-old All-Stars rallied for five runs in the top of the fifth inning and held on for a 5-3 win over Colorado Thursday afternoon at the Junior League Southwestern Regional Tournament.
Vidalia went into the top of the fifth trailing Colorado 1-0 before finally taking the lead with its five-run rally.
“We started out kind of slow at the plate. We had the bases loaded two times early in the game and got no runs. We were hitting the ball, but we were hitting it to somebody,” Vidalia 13-14s head coach Wesley McCarver said. “In the fifth inning, the bats came alive.”
Yet, unlike the early goings of the ball game in which Vidalia was not able to take advantage of its scoring opportunities, it did in that inning, and, oddly enough, with the bases loaded.
Kameron Stevenson got the win in relief after allowing two runs in the final three innings. Emily Rasco started the game for the Vidalia 13-14s and gave up one run in four innings.
“They did great. They got behind a few times in the count and came back and got the outs when they needed to,” McCarver said.
With the win, the Vidalia 13s and 14s, the Louisiana state champions, will play today at 1 p.m. against the New Mexico state champions in a winners’ bracket game.
