TYLERTOWN — Two blocked punts by Darrin Wiley made up for sub-par performance by Franklin County’s offense as the Bulldogs held on to defeat the Tylertown Chiefs 17-14 Friday night.
It was special teams that saved the day for Franklin County. Chris Robinson blocked a 35-yard field goal attempt by Tylertown’s Peyton Harvey early in the fourth quarter that preserved the Bulldogs’ 17-7 lead.
The two blocked punts led to 10 Franklin County points in the third quarter. Wiley scored on a 1-yard run and Trinity Coleman made a 27-yard field goal.
Robinson scored on a 51-yard run nearly midway through the first quarter, but for the most part the Chiefs’ defense held him in check. He completed none of his four passes and finished with just 57 yards rushing on 24 carries. As a team, the Bulldogs had just six first downs and 85 yards of total offense and were penalized 10 times for 85 yards.
After Tylertown quarterback Ja’Moz Mark scored on a 6-yard run with 3:39 to go, Franklin County got the ball back and was able to run out the clock, but only after converting a fourth and 1 from its own 38-yard line with 1:36 left in the ball game. Franklin County (2-2) hosts South Pike at 7 p.m. Friday.
Wilkinson Co. defeats Forest Hill, 22-13
SUMMIT — Wilkinson County quarterback/defensive back Devin Voorhies didn’t have the stellar game on offense that Wildcat fans are used to, but Forest Hill saw how versatile he is thanks to his play on defense Friday night in their win over the Patriots.
Voorhies had 80 yards rushing on 14 carries and was 8-for-14 passing for 92 yards and one interception. Yet he was a force on the other side of the ball. He had five tackles, one quarterback sack and two interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown.
La’Darian Peterson also had a momentum-swinging play for the Wildcats, who had to play their home game at Southwest Mississippi Community College. After Elton Jolla was credited for a safety, Peterson returned the ensuing free kick 65 yards for a touchdown.
All of the scoring in this game was done in the first half. The Wildcats led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter and 22-13 at halftime. Nicholas Hull had seven carries for 20 yards and a touchdown while Allenzae Staggers had five catches for 40 yards.
Wilkinson County (3-1) plays host to South Plaquemines (La.) Friday at 7 p.m.
