OLLA, La. — Block High School ran the ball down at will, and there was nothing that LaSalle High School could do about it as the Bears defeated the Tigers 49-12 Thursday night to win the LHSAA District 3-1A championship.
“We keep getting better every week,” Block head coach Benny Vault Jr. said. “This was our third district championship in a row, but we have bigger goals right now.”
Trevor Vault had a 65-yard touchdown run with 2:00 to go until halftime and he added a 1-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter. He finished with three carries for 68 yards and was 0-for-4 passing.
Austin Danzy had a 6-yard TD run just past the midway point of the first quarter that gave the Bears a 6-0 lead and he scored on a 20-yard run with 6:29 left in the second quarter to give them a 29-6 lead. Danzy had 11 carries for 76 yards.
After Danzy’s second-quarter touchdown, Block did something it hadn’t done all season – attempt an extra point. And Kailynn Curry was good on the PAT. In fact, he was 3-for-4 on extra points Thursday.
Cameron Everett led Block’s ground game with 13 carries for 135 yards and a touchdown and Raymond Plummer had 22 carries for 132 yards with a touchdown and a lost fumble.
“We played real physical tonight,” Vault said. “We started 0-5. When we got our first win in district, the kids came together as a team.”
Block’s defense made it tough for LaSalle quarterback Cole Hendrix for much of the ball game. In fact, late in the third quarter, Jahmal Macklin sacked Hendrix and forced a fumble that was picked up by Aaron Calcote, who returned it 10 yards for a touchdown.
Macklin ended up with six tackles, two sacks and the forced fumble. Danzy led the team in tackles with eight.
“The (coaching) staff feels real good about where we are right now,” Vault said. “As long as we keep getting better as a team, we’ll be OK for the playoffs.”
LaSalle scored all of its 12 points in the second quarter, first on a 20-yard run at the 9:03 mark and then on a 50-yard pass from Hendrix to Logan Wilson with 2:26 left.
Block (5-5, 5-0) will find out on Saturday where it will be seeded and who it will play in the bi-district round of the LHSAA Class 1A Playoffs, which begin Nov. 15.
