Vidalia avenges itself with 64-54 victory

ST. JOSEPH — After losing their opener to Sicily Island Friday night at the Tensas High Tournament, the Vidalia Vikings went 1-1 in tournament action on Saturday, defeating the General Trass Panthers 64-54 before losing to the Tensas High Panthers 68-61.

In the win agaisnt General Trass in a game that started at 11:30 a.m., Vidalia trailed General Trass 18-14 at the end of the first quarter. Even though the Vikings outscored the Panthers in each of the next two quarters, they still weren’t able to grab the lead at the end of the third quarter. Instead, the game was tied at 48-48.

But in the fourth quarter, Vidalia’s defense forced General Trass into numerous turnovers and that lead to easy lay-ups. The Vikings outscored the Panthers 16-6 in the game’s final eight minutes.

Deion Brown led Vidalia with a game-high 17 points and Malik Jefferson finished with 11 points. Celton Campbell led General Trass with 13 points and A.J. Bruce added 10 points.

In the loss to host Tensas High, Isiah Thompson lit up the Panthers for a game-high 41 points. However, it was not enough as Vidalia could not overcome a poor-shooting first quarter in which the Vikings scored just five points and were down by 10 points at the end of the quarter.

Vidalia cut the lead to three points, 44-41, at the end of three quarters. But the Panthers rediscovered their offense in the fourth quarter and outscored the Vikings 24-20 to secure the win. Four players scored in double figures for Tensas High.

Vidalia (4-2) hosts Sterlington at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Girls prep basketball roundup

MONTEREY — Quinesha Branch led Block with a game-high 20 points as the Lady Bears defeated the Monterey Lady Wolves 49-40 Saturday afternoon in the girls’ championship game of the Monterey Tournament.

Vontresia Barber added 12 points for Block, which trailed Monterey 8-5 after one quarter of play before taking the lead thanks to a 19-10 advantage over the Lady Wolves in the second quarter for a 24-18 halftime lead.

The Lady Bears made sure that the Lady Wolves would not go on a big run to get back in the game in the second half. Block outscored Monterey 12-11 in the third quarter and 13-11 in the fourth quarter.

Karlee Woodruff led Monterey with 17 points, and Jody Duncan finished with nine points.

Block (2-3) next plays at Tioga at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Monterey (8-4) plays at Atlanta (La.) at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

General Trass 60, Vidalia 40

ST. JOSEPH — Tierra Bell had a game-high 18 points for Vidalia, but it was not nearly enough as the General Trass Lady Panthers rolled to a 60-40 win over the Lady Vikings Saturday morning at the Tensas High Tournament.

General Trass, which had four players score in double figures, led Vidalia 24-13 at halftime before breaking the game open in the third quarter.

Vidalia (0-4) hosts Sterlington at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
