FAYETTE — After three quarters of play, Jefferson County looked like it was on its way to defeating East Feliciana (La.) Saturday night and going undefeated at its own holiday tournament.
But despite a 70-63 loss, the Tigers still won the first-place trophy after going 2-1, thanks in large part to their upset win over Class 1A No. 2-ranked Hinds Agricultural High School on Friday night.
The host Tigers had a 52-43 lead and their offense was getting better as the game went on. Then all of a sudden, the visiting Tigers from Clinton, La., decided to play more aggressive defense in the fourth quarter and that proved to be a big factor in their stunning, come-from-behind win.
East Feliciana ended up scoring 27 points while holding Jefferson County to just 11 points in the final eight minutes of the finale of the Jefferson County Holiday Tournament.
Ry’Yale Brown led Jefferson County with 20 points. Akeem Williams finished with 13 points and Christian Day poured in 11 points.
Jefferson County (6-7) next plays at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday when it hosts Port Gibson.
Block 64, Jena 54
JONESVILLE — Dariun Bowman led Block High School with 19 points as the Bears held on for a 64-54 win over the Jena Giants Saturday night.
Block appeared to be in control of the game after racing out to a 20-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 35-17 lead at halftime. However, Jena got back in the game by outscoring the Bears 26-15 in the third quarter to cut the deficit to just seven points at 50-43.
The Giants were unable to keep the momentum going in the fourth quarter and were outscored by the Bears 14-11. Jahmal Macklin and A.J. Barber scored 10 points each for the Bears.
Block (6-6) plays at Captain Shreve at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Hinds AHS 69, Prentiss 51
FAYETTE — Jarius Smith led the Hinds Agricultural High School Bulldogs with 13 points as they defeated the Prentiss High School Bulldogs 69-51 Saturday afternoon at the Jefferson County Holiday Tournament.
Deandre Bolton and Labarrion Taylor contributed to a balanced scoring attack for Hinds AHS with 10 points each. Seven players for that team scored at least five points in the game. However, the Bulldogs from Utica were not able to pull away until the fourth quarter, when they outscored the Bulldogs from Prentiss 20-10.
Donta Ford led Prentiss with a game-high 23 points and James Hawthorne scored 11 points.
