A collaborative organization geared toward helping Louisiana residents get health coverage will be at the Concordia Parish Library in Ferriday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today to give a presentation on insurance plans that are available through the health insurance marketplace.

The system was created through the Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as ObamaCare, and opened for Louisiana residents Oct. 1.

Open enrollment for the marketplace ends March 31.

The organization provides trained navigators throughout Louisiana to help people sign up through the exchange, healthcare.gov.

Amber Cox with Navigators for a Healthy Louisiana will be at the library guiding residents through the process, which can take nearly an hour.

To make an appointment, call 1-866-428-4173 or by email at amber@clahec.org.

Friday forum

This week’s topic includes representatives from the City of Natchez discussing “City Government.”

The weekly forum begins at 8 a.m. at Natchez Coffee Company.

Second Saturday

Shopping, art events, music and refreshments will greet visitors and locals alike downtown Saturday.

The monthly Second Saturday event features a number of shops and galleries that will be open all day with extended hours.

Writer’s guild meeting

The Natchez chapter of the Mississippi Writers Guild will host its monthly meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday at Natchez Coffee Company.

Published and non-published writers are welcome to attend.

The guild is a non-profit organization sponsoring a variety of literary and educational events around the state.

Chapter leader Mark LaFrancis said the guild is a great way for those who enjoy writing or reading other people’s writing.

“It’s open to everyone who has an interest in the writing endeavor — from the novices all the way to the professionals,” LaFrancis said. “We’ll be discussing writing workshops, an open mic night we’re planning, our participation in the Natchez Literary and Cinema Celebration and anything else folks want to talk about.”

For more information, call Mark LaFrancis, chapter leader, at 601-442-0980.

Kitten adoption day

The Natchez-Adams County Humane Society will host a kitten adoption day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Stine Lumber on U.S. 61.

The price of adopting an animal — $35 for two kittens and $25 for one kitten — incudes spaying and neutering costs.

Natchez Art Association

The Natchez Art Association will host the art exhibit “Rhapsody in Blue” from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Natchez Art Center, located at 118 N. Pearl St. No. 105.

Carolyn Weir, local artist and member of the association, said the exhibit is hosted each month with a different theme.

“We pick a theme, and all the artists strive to create new work to that month’s theme,” Weir said. “It’s a way to inspire the artists to not only work regularly but work outside of their normal guidelines.”

“Rhapsody in Blue” is a musical composition created by American composer George Gershwin in 1924 that combines elements of classical music with jazz.

“That theme can be taken so many ways, such as a musical subject or something to do with the color blue, which I think most everyone is going with,” Weir said. “The artists are going to interpret the subject in their individual way, and that is what’s so great about it.”

The event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served at the exhibit.
