Natchez Police Chief Danny White said the few roads that were closed in Natchez Tuesday have been reopened.

“It’s still an absolute mess out there,” White said. “If you don’t have to be on the roads, don’t be on the roads.”

Traffic was backed up this morning near the flyover bridge at the intersection of U.S. 61 and Lynda Lee Drive, which remains closed.

Mississippi Highway Patrol Sgt. Rusty Boyd said 18 wheelers are having issues making it up the hill because of ice nearly 9 miles north of Woodville.

“We got a mess out there because a lot of these areas are still impassable,” Boyd said. “Until we get more thawing, it’s going to stay bad.”

Boyd said the majority of the state roadways remain open, but stranded motorists are scattered throughout the roadways, and travelers should be aware of the dangerous conditions.

“I can’t tell you how many vehicles are just left on the road,” Boyd said. “People just said, ‘I’ll come and deal with it later.'”

The eastbound Mississippi River Bridge at Natchez was reopened this morning after Mississippi Department of Transportation crews de-iced the bridge. Currently, both lanes of traffic on the eastbound and westbound bridges are open to motorists.

Vidalia Police Chief Arthur Lewis said all roads in Vidalia are open, but still remain dangerous for travel.

“We’re still recommending people not go out, but if they have to, drive slow and be careful,” Lewis said. “Be as safe as possible out there.”

Concordia Parish Sheriff Kenneth Hedrick said the majority of the roads in the parish have not been de-iced and are not safe for motorists.

“We’re urging residents to please stay indoors if at all possible,” Hedrick said. “Also, check on any elderly neighbors or residents that might need assistance.”
