Ferriday — Friday was the start of a four-games-in-six-days stretch for Ferriday High School as it tries to make up games postponed this week, but its 49-47 loss against General Trass High School was not the start the Trojans were looking for.

DaJohn Mitchell scored 13 for the Trojans, and Adrian Wiggins added 10 points, but the Trojans had a hard time containing A.J. Bruce, who scored 20 points for General Trass.

The Trojans stayed in contention in a back-and-forth game that saw the lead change several times throughout.

But what made the difference was the Panthers’ 7-0 run generated from a sudden full court press and capped off by Bruce’s steal and layup with 2:53 left in the game to go ahead 47-40.

It was the biggest lead the Panthers had all game.

The Trojans answered Bruce’s layup with a wing three-pointer by Wiggins to come within four points, 47-43.

General Trass tried running down the clock after going up 49-45, but strong defense by Ronald Davis resulted in a steal and lay up to bring the game to 49-47 with 1:05 left to go.

The Panthers did a better job with securing the basketball as they ran the clock down. Ferriday had two fouls to give, and when they finally got possession of the ball, there was just seven seconds left in regulation.

Head coach K.G. Watkins said the last play went as planned, but they couldn’t get a good shot off.

“We had a play designed,” Watkins said. “We were going to take the 3 if they gave it to us, but we were going to look in the post first. The kids had a good look at the 3, but we just couldn’t get it to go. The guys battled because we got down, but they didn’t give up.”

Watkins said their offense hurt them tremendously, as they missed several layups and 10 free throws.

“We couldn’t make the easy shots,” he said. “Free throws killed us, and we just weren’t concentrating and doing the little things.”

After a tough loss, the Trojans (5-13, 2-3) must turn around and play a make up game against Sterlington High School at 5 p.m. today,

Ferriday girls 79, General Trass 68

The Lady Trojans have gained a lot of confidence lately, and it showed Friday in a 79-68 win against General Trass High School.

Jada Griggs dropped 30 points against the Lady Panthers, and Shakeria Kelly chipped in with 28 to lead Ferriday to victory.

Ferriday went up 18-16 in the first quarter and went into halftime ahead 35-34, but the Lady Trojans built some distance from General Trass with a 25-point third quarter that gave them a 60-48 lead that the Lady Panthers were unable to recover from despite outscoring Ferriday 20-19 in the final quarter.

The win improved the Lady Trojans to 4-1 in district, and head coach Lisa Abron said she hopes Ferriday’s good start leads to even bigger things.

“It feels really good to start out (in district) this way,” Abron said. “It’s been a couple of years since we’ve been in the hunt, and it helps build our confidence a little bit.

“We know what it is we have to do to win games, and us having five straight home games helps a lot. Hopefully, we can make a run for it and get into the top 16 in power points so we can have a first-round game at home.”

Ferriday (9-8) plays against Sterlington High School at 3 p.m. today.
