UTICA — Led by the duo of Octavia Barnes and Erica Harris, the Hinds Agricultural High School Lady Bulldogs did not let a bad first quarter bother them as they ended up with a 41-29 win over the Cathedral Lady Green Wave Tuesday afternoon in an MHSAA Division 7-1A game.
However, it was not the blowout win that Hinds AHS has been used to doing to Cathedral in recent years — including their first match-up nearly a month ago.
“We were able to break their press and shoot free throws,” Lady Green Wave head coach Randy Smith said. “We cut our turnovers down. We shot 80 percent, 8 of 10, from the free-throw line.”
The Lady Bulldogs did not play like the top-ranked team in Class 1A in the first quarter — at least not on the offensive end as they struggled to score just two points. But their defense made sure that Cathedral would not get a big lead. The Lady Green Wave held a 4-2 lead at the end of the quarter.
Then Hinds AHS took over in the second quarter as it outscored Cathedral 15-7 for a 17-11 halftime lead. The Lady Bulldogs continued to pull away in the third quarter and led the Lady Green Wave 31-18 at the end of that quarter.
Barnes led Hinds AHS with 16 points and Harris finished with 12 points. Elizabeth Smith led Cathedral with a game-high 17 points, but no other player scored more than four points.
Cathedral (11-10, 4-7) plays host to St. Aloysius for Senior Night at 6 p.m. Friday in its regular-season finale.

Cathedral struggled in the first quarter, trailed Hinds AHS 18-6 at the end of the quarter, and was never able to recover. The Green Wave was outscored by the Bulldogs 24-18 in the second quarter and 19-13 in the third quarter.
James Coley added eight points for Cathedral. Juwan Burks led a balanced scoring attack for Hinds AHS with a game-high 15 points.
