VICKSBURG — Visitation services for Elizabeth Ann Thompson, 83, of Vicksburg, who died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, at Belmont Gardens in Vicksburg, will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Glenwood Funeral Home.

Burial will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, in the Fayette Cemetery under the direction of Glenwood Funeral Home.

Mrs. Thompson was born Aug. 20, 1930, in Helena, Ark., the daughter of Claude Earl and Edna Albina Fairly Geoghegan.

She was affectionately called “Sissy” by her family. She grew up in Fayette and graduated valedictorian from Fayette High School in May 1947. After high school, she graduated from Draughon’s Business School majoring in Secretarial Science and was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa.

She worked in the life insurance business most of her life. After her children left home, she took the test for the U. S. Civil Service Commission seeking a position with the State Department as a Foreign Service Secretary.

She scored 92.5 when she took the exam in 1973. Reported by The Clarion Ledger, Thursday, April 18, 1974, only 1,600 passed the exam in 1973 of more than 13,700 who took the exam that year. She served as Secretary to the Director of the Legislative Audit Committee of the Mississippi House of Representatives from April 1973 until July 1974.

She married Claude Thompson on April 26, 1974, in Vicksburg. They were happily married and enjoyed 12 years of exploring life, traveling, fishing and camping until his death on Oct. 16, 1986 at the age of 79.

Both were active members of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he was Elder Emeritus.

He enjoyed working with the Boy Scouts of America as a long time Scoutmaster and Scoutmaster to many Woodbadge Training Troops for adult Scouters. He also enjoyed woodworking, gardening and traveling.

Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two brothers, Claud Edwin and James Francis Geoghegan.

Survivors include three sons, Herbert Daniel “Dan” Cameron and wife, Cathy Ann, of Oklahoma City, Claude Geoghegan Cameron and Robert Francis Cameron; one daughter, Edna Elizabeth Cameron; two grandsons, Alex and Scott Cameron; one granddaughter, Kelly Elizabeth Cameron of Austin, Texas; and two cousins, Elizabeth Fairly Medlin of Farmerville, La. and Margaret Aldridge Madison Hill of Gloster.
