WATERPROOF — Services for Harold Edward Turner, 79, of Waterproof, who died Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at Riverland Medical Center, will be at 10 a.m. today at Myrtle Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Adrian Lundy officiating.

Burial will follow in Natchez National Cemetery under the direction of Concordia Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time today at the church.

Mr. Turner was born May 20, 1934, in Waterproof, the son of Johnny and Mary Johnson Turner.

He was a retired teacher and girls basketball coach for the Tensas Parish School System.

He was a 1966 graduate of Grambling State University and he served two terms as Mayor of Waterproof, the first black mayor and alderman for Waterproof.

Mr. Turner was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, James Johnson; one sister, Alma Turner; one aunt, Minnie Nelson; and one niece, Rena Parson.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Wiley Turner; one daughter, Kellie Turner; two sisters, Doretha Turner and Delores Turner, all of Waterproof; one nephew, Darren Schiele, of Malaysia; three nieces, Vernell Taylor, of Waterproof, Johnice Jones, of Lynwood, Ill., and Michelle Cameron, of Houston; and a number of great-nephews, great-nieces and other relatives and friends.
