TYLERTOWN — Not many people who followed fast-pitch softball in MHSAA Region 7-3A this season expected Franklin County to be contenders. Wesson and Tylertown were the teams to beat in 2014.
But the Lady Bulldogs proved those doubters wrong in a big way, culminating in Friday afternoon’s 4-2 win over the Tylertown Lady Chiefs, which gave them the region championship.
Harley McKay had her issues with the strike zone during the game, but still managed to keep Tylertown off the scoreboard until the bottom of the sixth inning. And by that time Franklin County had built up a 4-0 lead. McKay allowed two runs, both earned, on seven hits, three walks and three hit batters and she struck out seven batters in seven innings.
The Lady Bulldogs scored two runs in the top of the third inning, one run in the top of the fourth and one run in the top of the sixth. Jamecia Starks went 2-for-3 with one run batted in and one run scored while Shelby Smith went 2-for-4 and Hayle McKinney had a double.
Franklin County (11-7, 5-1) next plays at Cathedral at 6 p.m. Monday.
Monterey 3, Vidalia 1
VIDALIA — Monterey’s Paige Bryan and Vidalia’s Taylor Rodgers were engaged in a pitcher’s duel until the Lady Wolves scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning as they defeated the Lady Vikings 3-1 Friday afternoon at the Concordia Recreation District 3 Complex.
Both pitchers went the distance and tried to help their teams as much as they could when they at the plate. Bryan picked up the win as she held Vidalia to just one run on five hits and four walks to go with six strikeouts and she had a double.
Rodgers allowed three runs, none earned, on five hits and no walks with five strikeouts and she was walked twice. The Lady Vikings scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the second inning.
Karlee Woodruff went 2-for-3 with one run batted in and Molly Gray had a double for the Lady Wolves. Savannah McCarver had a double for the Lady Vikings.
Monterey (12-7) hosts Grace Christian in an LHSAA District 6-B game at 4 p.m. Monday. Vidalia (11-10) hosts Marksville in an LHSAA District 3-3A game at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Enterprise 8, Cathedral 5
NATCHEZ — Enterprise scored six runs in the final three innings to rally from an early deficit as the Lady Yellow Jackets defeated the Cathedral Lady Green Wave 8-5 Friday afternoon. Cathedral broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. But that would be the last runs it would score against winning pitcher Carley Nations, who held the Lady Green Wave to just five hits and struck out six in a complete-game outing.
The Lady Yellow Jackets scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning, three in the top of the sixth and one in the top of the seventh. Kinsley Dahlin went 3-for-4 with one run batted in and Karlee Burgess was 2-for-3.
Emily Rasco took the loss after allowing seven runs, three earned, on five hits, four walks and one hit batter with three strikeouts in five and two-thirds innings. Tori Edwards had a double and McKenzie Milligan went 2-for-4.
Cathedral (5-7) plays host to Franklin County at 6 p.m. Monday.
