Children take focus of Second Saturdays

Published 12:11 am Wednesday, May 7, 2014

Children are the focus of Natchez Downtown Development Association’s 2nd Saturday committee activities during the daytime on 2nd Saturdays.

We want to provide opportunities for children to explore downtown and, hopefully, develop an appreciation for the historic architecture, diversity of shops and galleries, and living in a town with a safe, charming downtown where they can walk around and explore treasures waiting inside each business door.

Many people plan weekend get-a-ways or yearly vacations to Natchez, but they live here; this is a privilege to be recognized as early as possible.

As one would expect, in May and June we are observing Mother’s Day and Father’s Day by giving children an opportunity to make presents for their parents and hear stories about mothers and fathers.

On Saturday, children are invited to ArtsNatchez Gallery, 425 Main St., to create their own original Mother’s Day card beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Then, walk to Turning Pages, 520 Franklin St., to hear a story about Mother’s Day at noon.

On June 14, children are invited to Natchez Art Association, 118 N. Pearl St., to design and construct paper ties for their fathers beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Afterward, walk to Turning Pages to hear a story about Father’s Day at noon.

To continue the Natchez Fourth of July celebration, we are planning a patriotic themed scavenger hunt and story time for 2nd Saturday on July 12.
