GREENVILLE — Local golfers Greg Brooking and Pete Powell will tee off in the Mississippi Governor’s Cup at Greenville Country Club today.

Brooking and Powell were chosen in late March in a process that involves totaling the most player of the year points at state tournaments throughout the 2013 year.

Broking scored 425 points and Powell had 545 points.

Brooking and Powell are the only two to represent the same city on this year’s Mississippi team as they compete against team Arkansas.

This year is Brooking’s fifth time participating but Powell’s first, but the two are fortunate to be grouped together in today’s four-ball matches, Brooking said.

Brooking said the duo have spent the past six weeks since it was announced they were chosen to play practicing hard and sharing tips.

“We’ve practiced a lot together and talked about the mental side of the game,” Brooking said. “We hit a lot of balls together and our game has improved.”

The four-ball matches begin at 8 a.m. today at Greenville Country Club, and the foursome matches begin at 1:30 p.m.

The singles matches will take place at 8 a.m. Saturday. Each match is worth one point to the team’s total.
