Vidalia — Johnny Lee Hoffpauir has a busy summer ahead of him as City of Vidalia Recreational Director.
The summer schedule for the Concordia Parish District 3 Recreational Complex is a lengthy one, and currently youth girls softball and Dixie Youth baseball fills the calendar on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays until June.
Along with the youth leagues, the month of May will provide a “Free Fun Tennis Play Day” for ages 6 years and up, hosted by the Miss-Lou Tennis Association on May 17. On that very same day, the park will host a wooden bat tournament presented by Advanced Sports Braves for 11 and 12-year-olds. Another “Free Fun Tennis Play Day” will be featured on May 22, before a softball tournament hosted by Fastpitch America Softball Association occurs the following weekend on May 24-25. The last scheduled event in May is a co-ed softball tournament for adults on May 31.
The months of June and July consist of mainly all-star games.
“We’re hosting more of them this year,” Hoffpauir said. “People are starting to talk, and we’ve had a pretty good response throughout the state.”
FASA softball scheduled two more tournaments in June on June 14 and June 21. The first all-star tournament of the summer will take place on June 28, when Dixie Youth 7 and 8-year-olds participate in sub-district through July 3.
From July 4-10, a 9 and 10-year-old Dixie Youth District Tournament will take place.
From July 5-12, the softball little league district all-stars will play.
The park will host a softball little league tournament with ages 12, 14-and-under, 16-and-under and 18-and-under participating from July 11-18.
Meanwhile, the Dixie Seniors, 17-19-year-olds, will play in a state tournament at the complex from July 12-16.
The Dixie Youth 15 and 16-year-olds will play in a state tournament from July 12-16.
From July 24-30, the park will host the multi-state little league softball girls’ regional all-stars.
On Aug. 9-10, the park will host a United States Fastpitch Association Tournament.
Hoffpauir said he’s still working on bringing clinics, such as the LSU softball clinic the park put on last summer.
“We’re going to try to bring in some camps and clinics,” Hoffpauir said. “Things are happening daily, so you just never know.”
