MONTEREY — Kade Passman threw a no-hitter with six strikeouts and one walk and Tommy Poole drove in three runs as the top-seeded Monterey Wolves rolled to a 10-0 win over the eighth-seeded Stanley Panthers in five innings Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the LHSAA Class B Playoffs.

After struggling in all three phases against a good Holden team in the regional round before rallying for a 10-8 win, Monterey head coach Eric Richard said he was proud of the way the team for getting off to a good start and keeping the pressure on Stanley.

“It was good to go out and have a clean top of the first inning and score a (few) runs in the bottom of the first. With this being a quarterfinal game, that settled our nerves down some,” Richard said.

Passman retired the side in the top of the first inning before Monterey plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Richard added that those two things set the tone for the rest of the game.

“He pitched well. He threw a lot of strikes and located his pitches well. We also played good defense behind him,” Richard said. The left side of the infield, Jake Barlow at third base and Dillon Smith at shortstop, had a great day.”

Monterey led 5-0 after two innings of play before Poole stepped up and delivered a two-run double in the bottom of the third inning to give the Wolves a 7-0 advantage. They capped off the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and then Passman finished off the Panthers with a scoreless top of the fifth.

Poole ended up going 2-2 while Barlow went 2-for-2 with one run batted in and Hayden Cassels was 2-for-3 with one RBI. The Wolves ended up with nine total hits for the game.

“The key was we put the hits together and we got hits with runners in scoring position,” Richard said. “Today we just were able to get the timely hits. We had a good day at the plate.”

Monterey (20-4) will next play in the semifinal round of the LHSAA Class B State Baseball Tournament at McMurry Park in Sulphur, La. against the winner of the Fairview/Florien game on Thursday, May 15 at a time to be determined.
