NATCHEZ — For local basketball teams, the summer is still game time.

Several junior high and high school teams like to participate in team camps around the state during the summer, but Adams County Christian School girls’ basketball head coach Melanie Hall likes to bring the competition to her.

ACCS will host a girls’ basketball team camp called the Miss-Lou team camp for junior high and high school teams June 2 to 4.

Hall said the camp started when she coached at Trinity Episcopal Day School and Ricky Gray was the coach at ACCS.

“We started the team camp together between the schools, and when Ricky left, his dad came to ACCS and (John) Gray and myself continue the camp and have been doing this over 10 years now,” she said

In its tenure, the camp has seen participation from Monterey, Ferriday, and Cathedral high schools along with Wilkinson County Christian Academy and Tensas Academy.

The camp’s purpose is to keep the players in game mode, but also for the coaches to see where his or her team needs work before the season starts in the winter.

But basketball isn’t Hall’s favorite part of the camp.

“We wanted to have a devotional break in the middle of the day and have speakers come in and I think its one of the things that set our camp apart,” Hall said. “We break around lunch time and our speaker would speak for 15 minutes then we would start with games again.”

Hall said the camp guarantees each team three games a day, and allows flexibility in game schedules for those who play summer softball.

The entry fee is $70 per player, and coaches are asked to have registration and T-shirt sizes ordered by May 16.
