ENID, Okla. —Caleb Upton and Hinds Community College opened up the 2014 Division II NJCAA College World Series with back-to-back high-scoring victories.
Fresh off Saturday’s 14-11 victory against Lincoln Land College, the Eagles entered the bottom of the eighth inning down 8-6 to Vincennes University Monday when Upton’s teammate Chase Lunceford hit a 3-run home run that led to a 10-8 victory.
“I was praying for any kind of hit,” Upton said. “When he hit that home run, I jumped off of my feet.”
Unfortunately because of back issues, it would take something as dramatic as a late inning home run to bring Upton to his feet. After one at bat, which Upton flew out to right field, Upton was pulled from the game.
“It was giving me some trouble (Monday),” Upton said. “It was nothing in particular. I just stay having trouble with my back.”
Upton will be day-to-day now, and though he was unable to play the entire game Monday, Upton is riding high with his team’s come from behind victory.
“It’s a dream come true right now,” Upton said.
Barring any further back trouble, Upton will look for his first hit today against Pasco-Hernando State in the winner’s bracket. Serving as the team’s cleanup hitter, Upton is due for a hit, as one of Hinds’ most productive hitters went 0-5 against Lincoln Land Saturday.
Health permitting, he’ll get an opportunity to put his stamp on the series at 7 p.m.
