ENID, Okla. — Toler Robinson hit a walk-off double to left center field in the bottom of the 13th inning to help the Hinds Community College baseball team defeat Madison College and move to 4-0 in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) World Series in a game that lasted nearly five hours.
Hinds (39-19), No. 7 in the latest NJCAA poll and the lone unbeaten team left in the World Series, will now advance to the semifinal round at 7 p.m. today and will take on No. 1 Mesa Community College.
The Eagles got off to a tremendous start on Wednesday night against Madison, scoring six runs in the first inning to jump out to a 6-0 lead.
Quade Smith led off the contest with a walk and was moved to third base on a double by Luke Reynolds. Marshall Boggs then blasted a three-run home run to left field, his second in as many nights, to put Hinds ahead 3-0.
Robinson then doubled and scored on an RBI single by Casey Echols. Echols then scored on a two-run home run by Jonathan Washam, the first of his collegiate career.
The Wolfpack of Madison would slowly chip away at the Hinds lead, however, scoring two runs in both the third and fourth innings, and one run in the sixth inning to cut the Hinds lead to 6-5.
Madison would take a 7-6 lead in the seventh inning, but as they have done all season, the Eagles of Hinds would respond by never giving up.
Boggs tied the game at seven runs apiece when he shot a single through the middle of the field with two outs to score Brian Mills, but Smith was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second base to move the game into extra innings.
Austin Sanders would go to work on the mound at this point, escaping numerous jams to hold the Wolfpack scoreless through his four innings of work to earn the win on the mound and move to 8-1.
The freshman right-hander allowed three hits, struck out three hitters and finished with three walks, but more importantly, gave the Eagles offense a chance to strike.
Reynolds was able to reach first base with no one out in the bottom of the 13th inning to get things going. He moved to second base on a Boggs bunt, and Chase Lunceford was then intentionally walked, setting up Robinson’s heroics, a walk-off double in the left center field gap.
The Hinds bullpen held the game intact this evening, led by Sanders, but also a host of other standout performances.
Wesley Wilkinson drew the start on the hill for Hinds and threw three plus innings, allowing four runs (three earned) and only two hits in his outing. He turned things over to Derek Martin, who immediately struck out the side in the fourth inning.
Martin threw 3.2 innings, allowing three earned runs and finishing with five strikeouts. Gage Posey then threw a scoreless inning of work, striking out two hitters and allowing one walk.
Keller Bradford got the final out of the eighth inning to help the Eagles escape a crucial jam before handing the ball over to Franklin Hayes, who threw a scoreless ninth inning by picking up a strikeout and a double play.
Robinson finished the night 3-6 with one RBI and one run scored, while Boggs was 3-5 with four RBI and one run scored.
Smith continued his World Series multi-hit streak going by finishing 2-4 with one run scored and two walks. The freshman centerfielder has recorded at least two hits in all four wins so far.
Mills also recorded multiple hits, going 2-6 with one run scored.
