NATCHEZ — Two inmates have been sentenced in federal court in Natchez for participating in a deadly 2012 prison riot in Natchez.
One guard was killed and 20 people were injured in the May 20, 2012, riot at the privately run Adams County Correctional Facility in Natchez, which holds immigrants convicted of crimes while being in the U.S. illegally.
Prosecutors say Margarito Munoz-Astello was sentenced this week to 84 months in federal prison, and Raybel Granillo was sentenced to 57 months in federal prison.
Munoz-Astello and Granillo were among nine inmates who pleaded guilty to counts of rioting in a federal correctional facility.
Those defendants face a maximum prison sentence of 10 years, a fine of $250,000 and a supervised release term of 3 years.
Another inmate, Ian Reid, pleaded guilty to rioting in a federal prison facility. He will be sentenced Sept. 11. He faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
Several other inmates have been charged — or convicted — with participating in the riot, while five other inmates were indicted with the charge of conspiracy to commit murder.
During the riot on May 20, 2012, one guard — 24-year-old Catlin Carithers — was killed after inmates climbed to the roof where Carithers was deploying crowd-control gas and bludgeoned him with a blunt object.
Other guards were injured and taken hostage during the riot, as well as a number of inmates, and the prison sustained an estimated $1.3 million worth of damage.
Prison officials later said approximately 700 of the nearly 2,500 inmates housed at ACCC participated in the nearly seven hours of violence and looting.
Corrections Corporation of America operates the 2,567- bed low security prison.
