NATCHEZ — The Cathedral High School cheerleading squad made a name for themselves at the University of Southern Mississippi’s UCA cheer camp in May.
The Lady Wave won first place in Xtreme routine, second place in cheer division and third place in game day sideline cheer.
The squad also received many gold superior and blue superior ribbons.
Along with the team’s accolades, the Lady Wave earned the UCA Traditions Leadership Award, which was voted by the teams in the camp.
Cathedral cheer sponsor LaShon Brown said among all their accomplishments, she is happiest about the leadership award.
“I felt that they came together as a team, and this is the second year we won the leadership award and its one of the most special awards at camp,” Brown said. “It just shows that we have the teamwork, and the other teams vote on that, so it’s like the team you look up to the most at the camp gets the award.”
Brown said her squad will take what they learned from the camp, and strive to become a better team.
“The girls brought home a lot of material that we will use in the fall during football and pep rallies,” Brown said.
Cathedral cheerleaders Cece McKinney, Grace Anne White, Eden McMillin and Mackenzie Watts were chosen as the UCA All-Americans.
Watts was the overall winner of the jump off competition and was invited by the staff to try out to be a UCA instructor.
Abby Brown and Morgan Taylor won the Pin It Forward Award, chosen for kindness, leadership and motivation skills.
As the Lady Wave get ready for football season, Brown said she has some new surprises for the community to debut the 2014-15 cheerleading squad off the right way.
“I am very proud of my team,” she said. “They are very special to me and make my job enjoyable.”
