NATCHEZ — A Liberty man died Monday afternoon following a two-vehicle collision in Amite County.

Mississippi Highway Patrol troopers responded to a fatal collision on Mississippi 24 near East Newman Road in Amite County at approximately 5:52 p.m., according to Mississippi Highway Patrol Sgt. Rusty Boyd.

A 2011 Kia Optima, driven by Henry M. Spoler, 68, 1212 High St., McComb, was east bound on the highway.

A 1995 Pontiac Firebird, driven by Russell E. Lovett, 48, 5550 Mississippi 24, Liberty, was west bound on the highway.

The Pontiac driven by Lovett crossed into the east bound lane of traffic and collided head-on with the Kia driven by Spoler, Boyd said.

Spoler was airlifted to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge with moderate injuries.

Lovett was transported by ambulance to Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center in McComb where he died from his injuries.

No one involved was wearing an occupant restraint at the time of the collision.

The collision is still under investigation by MHP, Boyd said.
