Prep Roundup: Trinity, ACCS each lose by one

VIDALIA — For the second straight day, Trinity Episcopal had a lapse in pitching that allowed Central Private School to take the lead.
On Monday afternoon, the Lady Saints were able to overcome a nine-run rally by the Lady Rebels in the bottom of the fourth inning with a four-run rally of their own to claim an 11-9 win.
That would not be the case on Tuesday afternoon at the Concordia Recreation District 3 Complex as Central Private used a seven-run rally in the top of the second inning to take the lead and then held off Trinity’s late rally for an 8-7 win.
“We had that one inning where we fell apart. (Monday) afternoon we were able to come back and win. Today that didn’t happen,” a frustrated Trinity head coach Miranda Smith said. “It’s not defensive errors. Our pitchers seem to come out tired. They’re getting behind the count and walk some batters.”
Trinity scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and, just like a day earlier, seemed to be in control of the game. But Central Private had other ideas.
The Lady Rebels had already scored two runs before Michaela Hutchins came on in relief to try to preserve the Lady Saints’ lead. Instead, she gave up five more runs and ended up being charged with the loss.
“I need to have one person become a leader and say, ‘We need to come together instead of fall apart’,” Smith said.
Central Private added a key insurance run in the top of the third inning for an 8-3 lead before Trinity tried to mount a comeback of its own. The Lady Saints scored two runs in the bottom of the third to make it 8-5 and then tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Lady Rebels’ lead to 8-7. But they were unable to get the game-tying run home and the game was called due to the time limit.
Trinity lost the game despite out-hitting Central Private six to two. Tali Beard and Kaitlyn Lees each went 2-for-3 and Kayla Gilmore had a double.
Trinity Episcopal (5-7) hosts Porter’s Chapel at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Amite School Center 10, ACCS 9
NATCHEZ — Just when it looked like Adams County Christian School was on its way to big win over Amite School Center, along came the top of the fifth inning.
The host Lady Rebels committed all eight of their errors in that one frame and the visiting Lady Rebels from Liberty took advantage by scoring eight runs as they held on for a 10-9 win Tuesday night in an MAIS District 5-AA game.
ACCS scored three runs in two of the first four innings to jump out to what should have been an insurmountable 7-1 lead. But all of that big lead slipped away in the top of the fifth.
“We had those woes in the fifth inning again. Just one of those instances where the fifth inning just killed us again,” ACCS head coach Forrest Foster said. “Those errors killed us. We hit the ball well when we needed to early in the ball game.”
Amite School Center tacked on another run in the top of the sixth inning to go ahead 10-7. And that run turned out to be huge as ACCS scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to one run. However, the host Lady Rebels were shut out in the bottom of the seventh.
Jordan Petty went 3-for-4 and Kylie Powell was 2-for-4 with a double for ACCS, which was out-hit by ASC 15 to eight.
ACCS (7-7, 0-2) plays host to Silliman Institute today at 7:15 p.m.
West Lincoln 13, Franklin County 2
MEADVILLE — The West Lincoln Lady Bears needed just five innings to defeat the Franklin County Lady Bulldogs 13-2 Tuesday night by way of the 10-run mercy rule.
West Lincoln scored three runs in the top of the second inning to break a scoreless tie. After Franklin County scored both of its runs in the bottom of the second, the Lady Bears responded with three more runs in the top of the third inning for a 6-2 advantage. West Lincoln then put the game out of reach with seven runs in the top of the fifth.
Shelly Case went 2-for-2, Alyssa Case was 2-for-3 and Sierra Bethley had a double for the Lady Bulldogs, who finished with nine hits in the game. In fact, both teams had that many hits as well as the same number of errors – five.
Franklin County (2-3) will be on the road for its next game when it plays at Lawrence County at 6 p.m. Thursday.
