Saints’ 7-2 win against WCCA bittersweet

VIDALIA — The Trinity Episcopal Lady Saints scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning to overcome a 2-0 deficit as they went on to defeat the Wilkinson County Christian Academy Lady Rams 7-2 Tuesday afternoon at the Concordia Recreation District 3 Complex.
Despite the win that kept them undefeated in MAIS District 7-A, Trinity head coach Miranda Smith was not too pleased with what she called a lackluster effort by her team and playing down to a weaker opponent.
“We won, but it was an awful, ugly win. They were just kind of not all the way there,” Smith said. “WCCA’s got one of the slowest pitchers I’ve seen this season. We’ve got a great team. I’ve got half my team hitting .300 and above. But they weren’t aggressive.”
Smith compared this game to the one against a not-so-good Porter’s Chapel team in last year’s MAIS Class A South State Tournament. In that game, the Lady Saints escaped with a one-run victory.
“They need to take it one inning at a time. They need to be consistent,” Smith said. “I’m proud of them. A win is a win. But I don’t think we’re quite 100 percent with our mental game. I felt like this team is 10 times better than the way we came out today. That goes back to not being ready for the game. We had opportunities to bring in more runs, to move runners into scoring position. We had too many base-running errors.”
WCCA scored one run in the top of the first and second innings to take a surprising 2-0 lead. The first run was off starting pitcher Kailey Hutchins, who lasted just that one inning. She allowed one unearned run on no hits with one walk and she struck out the side.
But that lead did not last long after Trinity took the lead for good in the bottom of the second. The Lady Saints added one run each in the bottom of the third and fourth inningsnings to put the game out of reach. Tali Beard hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth.
“We started off the bottom of the second with a couple of infield errors. We walked a couple of runs home,” WCCA head coach Jessie Toney said. “We made some nice plays. We’re improving. We hit the ball, but it was right at someone. They made the plays.”
Michaela Hutchins came on in relief and pitched the final four innings. She got the win after allowing one unearned run on two hits and four walks to go with three strikeouts.
Jasmine Ivory had a double for the Lady Saints while Rhiannon Nettles had both of the Lady Rams’ hits.
