Harrisonburg — A Catahoula Parish grand jury has returned an indictment of first-degree murder against two people arrested in connection with the partial human remains found in a cornfield near Sicily Island earlier this year.
Daniel White, 36, of Sterlington, and Leah Marie Pontiff, 30, of Monroe, were arrested in connection with the case in late June. White was initially charged with second-degree kidnapping, while Pontiff was charged with obstruction of justice at the time.
The indictment means the Catahoula Parish grand jury believes enough evidence exists to try the two suspects on the upgraded charges.
The case began June 26, when Pontiff led investigators with the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office to a cornfield in Sicily Island, telling them she knew where a body was buried. The partial remains discovered there were identified as Gwendolyn McIntosh, 29, of Sterlington.
Investigators looked for a second burial site, but were not able to locate it.
Catahoula Parish Sheriff James Kelly said even as the indictment was handed down ,the investigation continues.
“The evidence is still being examined by the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab,” he said. “We have over 60 pieces of evidence to be examined.”
The sheriff said both of the suspects knew the victim, and CPSO investigators do not have other suspects in the matter at this time.
Seventh Judicial District District Attorney Brad Burget could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
