No sweets for Darby’s burglar, just jewelry

NATCHEZ — A burglar who broke into Darby’s early Friday morning apparently didn’t have much of a sweet tooth — choosing to steal jewelry instead of the store’s famous fudge.
“I was kind of disappointed that he didn’t get any fudge,” said Dennis Short, who runs the store with his wife Darby. “Last time we had a break in they got fudge, but this time it was just Pandora jewelry.”
Dennis said he and his wife found the glass to the front door of the store shattered at 7 a.m. Friday.
Video from security cameras at the store showed a man using a crowbar to break a padlock on the door before trying to break the deadbolt lock at approximately 4 a.m.
“The deadbolt held, so I guess he got mad and took the crowbar and busted the window out and just stepped on in,” Dennis said. “All he wanted was the jewelry, I guess.”
Dennis said he and his wife hadn’t yet calculated exactly how much was stolen, but did say it was at least $1,000 of merchandise.
Natchez Police Department Lt. Craig Godbold said investigators reviewed the security footage and were in the process of identifying a suspect.
“A night patrol officer saw someone in the downtown area that fits the description of what we saw in the video,” Godbold said. “We’re checking out a few more details before we do anything.”
Godbold said no other business in the area reported a break in Friday.
