Hancock adds wrinkles to offense, sheds confusion

Vidalia — Entering the second game of the season, Vidalia head coach Jeff Hancock isn’t afraid to shake things up.

In a 14-12 loss to Delhi, the Vikings committed several penalties on offense and defense throughout the loss. Hancock admitted he added one too many plays for his Vidalia team to comprehend and execute last Friday.

“We took out a couple plays that our guys had confusion with,” Hancock said. “We’ll always run our base plays, but we’re adding a few things that will be easier for the guys.”

His team has responded positively. In fact, Hancock said it’s been one of the best weeks of practice his team has had.

“I joked with the players the other day and told them we’re running the new stuff better than the plays we ran for two months,” Hancock said.

Hoping for a better result, the Vikings turn their attention from one Delhi team to another. In the Vikings’ first home game of the season, Vidalia will host Delhi Charter, a team that is coming off of a 39-26 victory against Caldwell Parish. Hancock hopes the old coaching adage about improvement rings true Friday.

“The biggest improvements are between week one and week two,” Hancock said. “Our defense looked really good last week, and any (Dee) Faircloth coached defense is only going to improve week-by-week.”

Whether the Vikings will be with Johnny Anderson or not remains to be seen. Anderson suffered a shoulder injury against Ferriday in the jamboree and did not play against Delhi in the season opener. Hancock suggested Anderson could see the field in some type of capacity tonight.

“We took him off of the (physically unable to perform) list and he’s a game time decision,” Hancock joked.

Kickoff between Delhi Charter and Vidalia will be at 7 p.m. at Dee Faircloth Viking Stadium.
