Vidalia — Vidalia head coach Jeff Hancock’s newly added offensive plays paid off before a 6-6 tie with Delhi Charter was suspended.
The weather forced a pause in action with Vidalia getting the ball on their 30-yard line with 7:53 left to play in the second quarter. The game will resume at 2 p.m. today.
Before the lightning struck, Vidalia struck first blood on a pass from Cole Cangemi to Is’Rell Cage roughly 20 yards out on a 4th-and-8 in the first quarter.
“Would you have expected a pass there?” answered Hancock when asked if he caught Delhi Charter’s defense by surprise. “We added plays to our base offense, and the kids executed it well.”
Hancock said the team played well with the exception of one mistake, which led to Delhi Char ter producing points on a scoop and score. Vidalia’s Johnny Anderson tried to reverse field before he was hit by a host of defenders and fumbled the ball. Delhi Charter picked the fumble up and scored to make the game 6-6.
Anderson injured his shoulder again in the contest and had to be transported to the hospital.
“I’m not sure what his status is, but I don’t think he’ll be able to go (today),” Hancock said.
Overall, Hancock was pleased with what he saw before the weather intruded, watching his team absorb his philosophy and execute to his liking.
“Like I said leading into the game, it takes time to get kids to understand everything we’re trying to teach them, but once they do, you’ll see improvements every week,” Hancock said. “Our guys were firing off the ball and running backs were being patient.”
Hancock asked his players to report at 11:30 a.m. today to get focused.
