FAYETTE — Jefferson County senior running back Arthur Norton could not be slowed down by McLaurin High School’s anemic attempt at tackling as he ended up with 211 rushing yards on 21 carries and three total touchdowns as the host Tigers defeated the visiting Tigers 38-8 Friday night.

Norton scored on a 14-yard run with 9:24 to go in the first quarter and had touchdown passes of 46 yards in the first quarter and 40 yards early in the third quarter, both from James Claiborne. Norton also had a 2-point conversion run.

Jefferson County took a 14-0 lead after one quarter of play thanks to Norton’s first two touchdowns of the game and then took a 20-0 lead into halftime after Rashard Brown threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to James Herrington Jr.

Brown also scored on a 5-yard run with 5:00 left in the fourth quarter and Ty Cameron scored on a 9-yard run and it looked like the host Tigers’ defense was on its way to pitching a shutout.

That was until Marcelos Chase scored on a 5-yard run with 50 seconds to go in the ball game and the 2-point conversion was good.

Jefferson County could have won the game by an even wider margin had it not been for four turnovers and 18 penalties for 139 yards. Its defense held McLaurin to just 158 yards of total offense and forced nine turnovers.

Jefferson County (2-2) will be on the road next Friday when it plays at South Delta with kickoff at 7 p.m.
